Special Projects

A message from Victoria Hernandez
(Artistic Director

It was approximately 16 years ago I thought of an idea that would not only give my vocal students a once in a lifetime opportunity & experience but also an avenue to generate funds for those in need & give back to society.  It all began with the vocal students from our music school the York Region Conservatory of Music. Our first CD compilation exactly 16 years ago entitled “Winter Voices” benefited the Hospital for Sick Children & the Starlight Foundation.

This was followed by the CD “Living in Harmony” & a series of broadway compilations entitled “Showtime”.  Through these projects, many charities have benefited from the proceeds such as: Ability Online, MercyCorps (for the children victims of 911), Tsunami & Katrina Funds via the Red Cross, the Humane Society, etc…

However, I know now that all these years, it was only preparation to take the yearly CD project to an even bigger level.  In the summer of 2009, we invited singers from the GTA to walk through the doors of the York Region Conservatory of Music & audition in order to secure a spot on the “Superstars” CD. Not having stipulated an age requirement, I was left with many, many talented singers ranging in age.  After auditioning more than 120 singers, I narrowed down & selected my 49 singers that were to appear on that “Superstars” CD Compilation. These singers not only lended their talent to the project but also spiritually touched every child that that passed through the Hospital for Sick Children that particular year. There were 391 patients in the hospital that Christmas.  Each patient received a copy of our `Superstars` cd.

The proceeds that we generate through sales & at our EVENING WITH THE STARS GALA will be forwarded to the “Priority Need” Sector of our local Childrens` Hospital.

It was not until my son was born & saved by Dr. Priscilla Chiu at the Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto) did I realize that this yearly project I had been doing would be dedicated from that day forth to our local Hospital for Sick Children. I’d like to thank Dr. Chiu again for attending our gala that year & speaking on behalf of the hospital.  It was a very touching and personal speech that will never be forgotten.  It left our audience aware, thankful and appreciative in many ways.

Everyone at the hospital from the moment you walk in at reception to the numerous volunteers to the dedicated surgeons make the Hospital more of a comfortable & welcoming treatment center with a positive atmosphere rather than a medical institution.  Only with your assistance and networking, could we have made this project and event possible.  It is what each one of you did or provided that collectively added up to such a successful evening.

I would like to close by thanking each & every one of our Superstar Vocalists, our guests & our sponsors & donors for all coming together & making our “Evening with the Stars” such a success.

Blessings to All of You!

Victoria Hernandez (Registered Adjudicator with the Canadian Music Festival Adjudicators Association & Examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music--Toronto) will be interviewing singers of all ages (4 & upwards--adults welcome) for a very special CD Project & Gala where a portion of the proceeds will help various charities specifically your local children's hospital.

Selected singers will be joining Victoria`s very own students & recording artists from across Canada & the US not only on a CD compilation but also at an extravagant gala that is held.  This gives singers an opportunity to perform in front of approximately 300-500 guests, media & invited record company executives.

In the past 16 years, this project has helped children's hospitals, the Katrina fund via Red Cross, the Tsunami fund via Red Cross, the children victims of 911, etc…

Most likely only one song of your choice will be heard (verse & chorus). However, Vocalists are encouraged to prepare 2 songs (something appropriate & in the line of love, nature, beauty or worship).  Song can be from any decade or style (Rock, pop, opera, broadway, R & B, country, blues, jazz, etc….)  Singers can choose to sing accapella or bring along a cd backing track to the audition.

Yes, your song can be an original. And yes, you can bring along a guitar to accompany.

If you have a band, we can only take the lead vocalist along with one instrumentalist for the final show as time & space do not allow for bands.

The CD compilation to be entitled “Superstars” will be recorded LIVE at the dinner gala “Evening with the Stars”.

This is an excellent opportunity whether you are an amateur or professional.  There is no fee to audition or be on the CD.  We count on guests & CD sales & or digital downloads from itunes  to recoup our costs.  You will be informed immediately if you've secured a spot on the CD.

Thank you kindly for taking interest in this very special project.
